CGPA to Percentage: Formula, Conversion Table & University Rules (2026)
๐ May 2026โฑ 8 min readโ๏ธ ToolLoom Editorial
Your marksheet shows 8.4 CGPA. Your job application asks for a percentage. What do you write? The answer depends entirely on which university or board issued your degree โ because CBSE, VTU, Mumbai University, and Anna University all use different conversion formulas. This guide covers every major one.
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average โ a weighted average of all grade points earned across all semesters of a course. It replaced the traditional percentage system at most Indian universities and colleges following UGC recommendations in 2009.
Conversion to percentage matters because many employers, government departments, foreign universities, and scholarship bodies still ask for marks as a percentage โ not a grade point average. Getting the conversion wrong can mean understating or overstating your actual academic performance.
โ ๏ธ
There is no single universal formula. Each university or board sets its own conversion multiplier. Using the wrong formula can misrepresent your percentage by 3โ7 marks โ which can make a real difference at cutoffs like 60% or 75%.
The Universal Conversion Formula
When your university has not specified a conversion formula, or when a general estimate is needed, the most widely accepted formula in India is:
General Formula (Most Indian Universities)
Percentage = CGPA ร 9.5
This is the UGC-recommended general formula and is widely used by CBSE, many state universities, and for general reference.
๐ Example: CGPA 8.2 on a 10-point scale
Percentage = 8.2 ร 9.5
โ Equivalent Percentage = 77.9%
๐ก
Always verify with your university first. The ร9.5 formula is a good default, but if your institution has published an official conversion formula (many do), use that instead โ especially for official documents, government applications, and foreign university admissions.
University-Specific Conversion Formulas
Here are the official or widely accepted conversion formulas for major Indian universities and boards:
CBSE (Class 10 & 12)
% = CGPA ร 9.5
Official CBSE formula. Used for Board results reported as CGPA (Class 10 pre-2017 system).
VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University)
% = (CGPA โ 0.75) ร 10

If unsure, ask your university registrar's office for the official CGPA-to-percentage conversion letter. Many universities issue official conversion certificates on request โ this is the only document that will be accepted for government jobs and foreign university applications.
CBSE Class 10 & 12 CGPA Conversion
CBSE introduced the CGPA system for Class 10 in 2009 and used it until 2017, when it returned to percentage-based marking. For Class 12, marks are reported as percentages directly. Here is how CBSE's own official conversion works for Class 10:
CBSE Class 10 Official Formula
Percentage = CGPA ร 9.5
Each subject grade point is multiplied by 9.5 to get the approximate marks. This is issued officially by CBSE.

The 60% threshold: Many government jobs, PSUs, and MBA programmes require a minimum of 60% marks. Using the ร9.5 formula, this corresponds to a CGPA of approximately 6.32. However, using VTU's formula, you need a CGPA of 6.75 to clear 60%.
Grading Scales โ 10-Point vs 4-Point
Most Indian universities use a 10-point CGPA scale. However, some institutions (particularly those following US-style programmes) use a 4-point scale. Foreign universities almost always use 4-point GPA. Here is how they compare:

For foreign university applications: Never convert your Indian 10-point CGPA to a 4-point GPA using simple arithmetic. Use the WES (World Education Services) or your target university's official conversion tool โ they use their own assessment criteria.
CGPA vs Percentage for Jobs and Higher Studies
Government jobs and PSUs
UPSC, SSC, and most state PSC exams ask for percentage โ use your university's official formula or ร9.5 as fallback.
PSU recruitment (ONGC, BHEL, HAL) typically requires 60% or 6.5 CGPA โ check which they accept.
For official applications, always attach a university-issued conversion certificate alongside your marksheet.
Private sector and campus placements
Most IT companies (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) accept CGPA directly โ typically minimum 6.0 or 6.5 on a 10-point scale.
For MNCs and consulting firms, a CGPA of 7.5+ (equivalent ~71%) is often the shortlist threshold.
Many companies now state requirements in both forms: "60% or 6.3 CGPA" โ verify both meet their cutoff.
MBA and postgraduate admissions
IIMs typically require 50% in graduation (โ5.26 CGPA on 10-point scale, ร9.5 method).
Many newer IIMs and private B-schools require 60% (โ6.32 CGPA).
CAT shortlisting uses percentage โ so knowing your accurate conversion is critical for application forms.

The most widely used formula in India is: Percentage = CGPA ร 9.5. This is the UGC-recommended general formula and is accepted by CBSE, most state universities, and for general reference. However, universities like VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and SPPU Pune use different formulas โ always check your specific university's official conversion method first.
Using the standard ร9.5 formula: 7.5 ร 9.5 = 71.25%. Using VTU's formula: (7.5 โ 0.75) ร 10 = 67.5%. Using Anna University's formula: (7.5 ร 10) โ 0.75 = 74.25%. The result varies significantly by university, which is why using the correct formula for your institution matters.
Using the standard ร9.5 formula: 8.0 ร 9.5 = 76.0%. VTU formula: (8.0 โ 0.75) ร 10 = 72.5%. Anna University: (8.0 ร 10) โ 0.75 = 79.25%. SPPU Pune: (8.0 โ 0.5) ร 10 = 75.0%. Again, the correct answer depends on your university โ the range here spans 72.5% to 79.25% for the same CGPA of 8.0.
Using the standard ร9.5 formula, 60% corresponds to CGPA 6.32 (60 รท 9.5). Using VTU's formula, you need CGPA 6.75 to reach 60%. Using Anna University's formula, 6.075 CGPA = 60%. This is particularly important for government job applications and MBA admissions that have a 60% minimum โ make sure you're using the right formula for your institution.
Yes โ a CGPA of 8.5 is generally considered excellent for campus placements in India. It converts to approximately 80.75% using the standard formula, which clears the minimum academic criteria for virtually all companies. Top IT firms, core engineering companies, and many MNCs shortlist at 7.5+ CGPA. A CGPA of 8.5 puts you in a strong position for most placement drives.
No โ this is the most common source of confusion. CBSE, VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, SPPU Pune, JNTU, and IP University all use different official formulas. The general ร9.5 formula (UGC-recommended) is the safest fallback when no specific formula is available, but it can give a result that differs by 3โ7 percentage points from your university's own formula.
