How to Use This Calculator
1

Choose your calculation mode

Three modes: CGPA to % (enter CGPA, pick your university), Calculate CGPA (enter all subject grades and credits to get your semester/cumulative CGPA), or % to CGPA (reverse conversion for foreign university applications).

2

Select your university or board

Each university has its own CGPA to percentage formula. CBSE uses ×9.5, Anna University uses (CGPA−0.5)×10, VTU uses (CGPA−0.75)×10. Select the right one to get an accurate conversion.

3

Enter grades and credits (CGPA mode)

For each subject, select your grade from the dropdown (or enter marks if using the custom marks option) and enter the credit value — typically 3, 4, or 5 depending on your course. The calculator weights each subject by its credit value.

4

See CGPA, percentage, and class

Results show your CGPA, equivalent percentage, class/division (First Class with Distinction, First Class, Second Class), and a subject-wise breakdown table.

💡For job applications and higher education, always mention both your CGPA and percentage equivalent — many HR systems and foreign universities only accept percentages. Use the reverse conversion mode to get your CGPA equivalent when applying abroad.

Why CGPA Matters for Placements and Higher Education

Your CGPA is one of the first filters applied by employers, universities, and government bodies when evaluating candidates. It is a standardised measure of academic performance that allows comparison across students, colleges, and institutions — even when absolute marks differ. A CGPA of 8.5 from Anna University and 8.5 from VTU represent different percentage equivalents, which is exactly why understanding the conversion formula for your specific university is essential.

In campus placements, most major recruiters — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, and virtually all IT companies — have a minimum CGPA or percentage cutoff at the application stage. Missing this cutoff by even 0.1 points means automatic rejection at the screening stage, regardless of your other skills. For government jobs, PSUs, and UPSC, percentage equivalents from your degree are often required in application forms.

💼
Campus Placements
Most companies have 6.5–7.5 CGPA cutoffs. Top product companies often require 8.0+. Know where you stand before applying.
🎓
Higher Education
MS/MBA applications abroad require percentage conversion. IITs and IIMs require percentile/percentage for gate/CAT equivalency.
🏛️
Government Jobs
PSU recruitment, bank PO exams, and UPSC applications often require minimum 60% or 55% in graduation — verified from CGPA.
📜
Class & Division
First Class with Distinction, First Class, Second Class — official degree class is determined by your final percentage equivalent.

How CGPA is Calculated — Formula and Worked Example

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects, where the weight of each subject is its credit value. Subjects with more contact hours (lectures + practicals) carry more credits and therefore have a greater impact on your CGPA.

CGPA Calculation Formula
Grade Points Earned (per subject) = Grade Point × Credits
CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ(Total Credits)
Percentage = CGPA × Conversion Factor (varies by university)
Example: Engineering student — Semester 3 CGPA calculation
Subject 1: Maths — Grade A+ (9 pts) × 4 credits = 36
Subject 2: Data Structures — Grade A (8 pts) × 4 credits = 32
Subject 3: Digital Electronics — Grade B+ (7 pts) × 3 credits = 21
Subject 4: English — Grade O (10 pts) × 2 credits = 20
Subject 5: Lab — Grade A+ (9 pts) × 2 credits = 18
Total grade points = 36+32+21+20+18 = 127 | Total credits = 4+4+3+2+2 = 15
CGPA = 127 ÷ 15 = 8.47
CGPA = 8.47 → Anna University: (8.47−0.5)×10 = 79.7% → First Class. VTU: (8.47−0.75)×10 = 77.2% → First Class.
💡Your CGPA from one semester is the semester GPA (SGPA). The CGPA on your final transcript is the cumulative average across all semesters, weighted by total credits per semester — not a simple average of SGPA values.

CGPA to Percentage Formulas — All Major Indian Universities

India has no single national standard for CGPA-to-percentage conversion — each university or board prescribes its own formula. Using the wrong formula can misrepresent your academic performance significantly. Here are the official formulas for all major Indian universities:

Important: These formulas are widely used but universities occasionally update their conversion policies. Always verify the current official formula from your university's examination regulations or contact your academic department before using the percentage on official applications.

What about the 4-point GPA scale?

Some Indian institutions and most foreign universities use a 4-point GPA scale where 4.0 is the maximum. To convert from Indian 10-point CGPA to 4-point GPA: multiply by 0.4 (e.g., CGPA 8.5 → GPA 3.4). This is a rough approximation — US universities like MIT and Stanford have their own evaluation methods and typically do not expect a direct formula conversion from Indian grades.

Class and Division — What Your CGPA Means

Indian universities formally classify degree results into divisions based on the final percentage equivalent. This classification appears on your degree certificate and is commonly required in government job applications, PSU recruitment, and higher education admissions.

⚠️Cutoffs change every recruitment cycle. Always check the official job description or campus placement announcement for current cutoffs — do not rely on previous year figures as many companies revised their criteria in 2025-26.

5 CGPA Calculation Mistakes Students Make

Mistake 1 — Using the wrong university's conversion formula
✗ Wrong: Using CGPA × 9.5 (CBSE formula) for an Anna University CGPA of 8.0 → 76%
✓ Right: Anna University formula: (8.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 75% — a 1% difference that crosses the distinction threshold.
This is the most consequential mistake — using the wrong formula can misrepresent your percentage by 3–8 percentage points, potentially the difference between First Class with Distinction and First Class. Always use your specific university's official formula. If you're unsure, check your examination regulations document or call the university's examination cell directly.
Mistake 2 — Averaging SGPA values instead of computing weighted CGPA
✗ Wrong: CGPA = (8.2 + 7.8 + 8.5 + 7.9) ÷ 4 = 8.1 (simple average of 4 semesters)
✓ Right: CGPA = Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(total credits across all semesters)
Semesters with more credits (often in later years with labs and projects) weigh more in the final CGPA. A simple average of SGPA values gives an incorrect result if total credits differ across semesters — which they almost always do. Use the Calculate CGPA mode in the tool above and enter all subjects with their individual credits for a precise result.
Mistake 3 — Forgetting to include lab and practical credits
✗ Wrong: Calculating CGPA using only theory subject grades and credits.
✓ Right: Include all labs, practicals, and project credits — they often carry 2–4 credits each and affect your CGPA significantly.
Students often score higher in practicals and labs (where attendance and submission count for marks) than in theory exams. Excluding these from CGPA calculation understates your actual performance. In engineering programmes, practical and lab credits can account for 20–30% of total semester credits — a significant weight. Always include all evaluated components.
Mistake 4 — Using CGPA × 10 for Anna University or VTU
✗ Wrong: Anna University CGPA 8.5 × 10 = 85% (incorrect — gives inflated result)
✓ Right: Anna University: (8.5 − 0.5) × 10 = 80%. VTU: (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%.
Many students and even some employers use the blanket "CGPA × 10" formula for all universities. This is incorrect for Anna University and VTU, which subtract a constant before multiplying. For Anna University, the error is 5 percentage points; for VTU, it is 7.5 points. These differences are material — 85% vs 80% is often the difference between shortlisting and rejection for competitive positions.
Mistake 5 — Not converting correctly for foreign university applications
✗ Wrong: Converting 8.5 CGPA directly to 85% and calling it equivalent to a US 4.0 GPA.
✓ Right: Use WES (World Education Services) or your target university's own Indian grade equivalency policy.
Foreign universities — especially in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia — evaluate Indian grades using their own equivalency policies, not a simple formula. What constitutes a "B" or an "A" in the US GPA system is determined by the university's admissions office, not by dividing your CGPA by 10. For GRE/GMAT applications, use official credential evaluation services like WES, IQAS (Canada), or NARIC (UK). Most universities give a provisional equivalency during the application review process.

Frequently Asked Questions

CBSE uses the official formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 9.2 gives 9.2 × 9.5 = 87.4%. This applies to both Class 10 and Class 12 results. CBSE CGPA is calculated as the average of grade points in the best 5 subjects. The maximum CGPA is 10.0, which corresponds to 95% using this formula.
Anna University uses: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10. For a CGPA of 8.5, the percentage is (8.5 − 0.5) × 10 = 80%. This formula applies to all Anna University affiliated engineering and technology colleges across Tamil Nadu. The formula was introduced when Anna University moved to the 10-point grading system. Using CGPA × 10 instead would overstate your percentage by 5 points — a common mistake.
VTU uses: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. For a CGPA of 8.0, the percentage is (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%. This formula applies to Visvesvaraya Technological University affiliated colleges in Karnataka for batches after 2015. Students from earlier batches may have a different formula — check your specific batch's examination regulations from the VTU website.
CGPA = Σ(Grade Point × Credits for each subject) ÷ Σ(Total Credits). Each subject's grade point (based on your grade — O, A+, A, B+, etc.) is multiplied by its credit value. All these products are summed and divided by the total credits. For example, if you scored A+ (9 pts) in a 4-credit subject and B+ (7 pts) in a 3-credit subject: CGPA = (9×4 + 7×3) ÷ (4+3) = (36+21) ÷ 7 = 57÷7 = 8.14. Use the "Calculate CGPA" mode in this tool to enter all subjects at once.
The CGPA required for First Class with Distinction (75%+) varies by university: Anna University requires CGPA ≥ 8.0 (since (8.0−0.5)×10 = 75%). VTU requires CGPA ≥ 8.25 (since (8.25−0.75)×10 = 75%). Mumbai University and AKTU require CGPA ≥ 7.5 (since 7.5×10 = 75%). CBSE requires CGPA ≥ 7.9 (since 7.9×9.5 = 75%). Always verify with your university's official graduation ordinance as thresholds can change.
TCS typically requires a minimum CGPA of 6.0 (60% equivalent) with no active backlogs. Infosys generally requires 6.5 CGPA (65%) and allows a maximum of 2 active backlogs in some rounds. Wipro typically requires 6.0. These cutoffs apply to the initial screening stage — shortlisted candidates then appear for aptitude tests and technical interviews. Cutoffs are announced in each placement notification and can vary by year, campus, and the specific hiring program (e.g., TCS NQT vs TCS Digital vs TCS BPS have different cutoffs).
For a rough conversion: CGPA (10-pt) = Percentage ÷ 10. For a 4-point GPA equivalent: GPA = CGPA × 0.4. However, foreign universities — especially in the US, UK, and Canada — do not use these formulas. They evaluate Indian grades through their own Indian grade equivalency policy or through credential evaluation agencies like WES (World Education Services). For official applications, use WES evaluation or check your target university's Indian grade conversion table on their admissions page.
For campus placements and career prospects: CGPA above 9.0 is excellent — opens doors to most companies and higher education. CGPA 8.0–8.9 is very good — First Class with Distinction at Anna University and VTU, competitive for most roles. CGPA 7.0–7.9 is good — First Class at most universities, meets cutoffs for most campus recruiters. CGPA 6.5–6.9 meets minimum cutoffs for mass recruiters like TCS and Infosys. CGPA below 6.5 may limit campus placement options but skills, certifications, and projects can compensate. For GATE and higher education, IITs often set informal cutoffs around 7.0+ CGPA for PhD admissions.
