Length Conversion — Feet, Inches, cm, Metres, Miles, km

Length is the most commonly converted unit — from height in feet to cm, to road distances in miles vs km, to fabric measurements in yards. India officially uses the metric system (metres, centimetres, kilometres) but feet and inches remain widely used for personal height and construction measurements.

Key Length Formulas
1 inch = 2.54 cm · 1 foot = 30.48 cm · 1 yard = 91.44 cm
1 metre = 100 cm = 3.28084 feet = 39.3701 inches
1 km = 1000 m = 0.621371 miles · 1 mile = 1.60934 km
Height 5'7" = (5×30.48) + (7×2.54) = 152.4 + 17.78 = 170.18 cm
From → ToMultiply ByExample
Feet → Centimetres× 30.485 ft = 152.4 cm
Inches → Centimetres× 2.546 in = 15.24 cm
Kilometres → Miles× 0.621371100 km = 62.14 miles
Miles → Kilometres× 1.6093460 miles = 96.56 km
Metres → Feet× 3.280841.8 m = 5.91 ft
Nanometres → Metres× 10⁻⁹Used in chip manufacturing (3nm, 5nm)

Weight Conversion — kg, Pounds, Grams, Tola, Maund

Weight conversions are used daily — from body weight in kg vs pounds, to gold weight in tolas (the traditional Indian jewellery unit), to cooking measurements in grams and ounces. India uses kilograms officially, but the tola remains the dominant unit in the gold and silver jewellery trade.

Key Weight Formulas
1 kg = 2.20462 lbs · 1 lb = 0.453592 kg · 1 oz = 28.3495 g
1 tola = 11.6638 g · 10 tola = 116.638 g (standard gold bar in India)
1 troy oz (gold pricing) = 31.1035 g = 2.6667 tola
1 maund = 40 seer = 37.3242 kg (British Indian standard)

When buying gold in India, the price is quoted per 10 grams or per tola. 1 tola = 11.6638 grams, so the price per tola = price per 10g × 1.16638. Global gold price is quoted per troy ounce = 31.1035 grams = 2.6667 tolas — so to convert global gold price ($/oz) to Indian price (₹/10g), multiply by (exchange rate × 10 / 31.1035).

Temperature Conversion — Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin

India uses Celsius for all official and daily temperature measurements. Fahrenheit is used in the USA and some older medical contexts. Kelvin is used in scientific work — 0 K (absolute zero) is the coldest possible temperature where all molecular motion stops.

Temperature Conversion Formulas
°C to °F: F = (C × 9/5) + 32
°F to °C: C = (F − 32) × 5/9
°C to K: K = C + 273.15
K to °C: C = K − 273.15
Quick trick: double the °C and add 30 ≈ °F (rough estimate)

Speed Conversion — km/h, mph, m/s, Knots

Speed is measured in km/h on Indian roads, mph in the US and UK, m/s in scientific contexts, and knots for maritime and aviation. The speedometer on Indian vehicles shows km/h. Aircraft altitude is in feet internationally but cruise speed is in knots (1 knot = 1.852 km/h).

Area Conversion — Indian Land Units (Bigha, Guntha, Acre, Hectare)

Land area measurement in India is particularly complex because traditional units (bigha, guntha, katha, cent) vary significantly by state. Always verify with local land records (RoR) as the bigha in UP is different from the bigha in Bengal or Rajasthan.

Data Storage — Bits, Bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB

Data storage units follow two different standards — binary (powers of 1,024 used by computers) and decimal (powers of 1,000 used by storage manufacturers). This is why a "1 TB" hard drive shows only ~931 GB when connected — the drive uses decimal (1,000 GB) but your computer measures binary (1,024³ bytes = 931 GB).

Binary vs Decimal Data Units
Binary: 1 KB = 1,024 bytes · 1 MB = 1,024 KB · 1 GB = 1,024 MB · 1 TB = 1,024 GB
Decimal: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes · 1 MB = 1,000 KB · 1 GB = 1,000 MB · 1 TB = 1,000 GB
Internet speed: measured in bits per second (Mbps). 1 byte = 8 bits.
100 Mbps connection downloads at ~12.5 MB/s (megabytes per second)

Frequently Asked Questions

1 foot = 30.48 centimetres exactly. This is the internationally defined conversion. So 5 feet = 152.4 cm, 5.5 feet = 167.64 cm, 6 feet = 182.88 cm. To convert feet to centimetres, multiply the feet value by 30.48. For feet and inches combined: convert feet to inches (×12), add the extra inches, then multiply total inches by 2.54 to get centimetres.
Celsius to Fahrenheit: F = (C × 9/5) + 32. For example, 37°C = (37×9/5)+32 = 66.6+32 = 98.6°F. Fahrenheit to Celsius: C = (F−32) × 5/9. Quick mental estimate: double the Celsius and add 30 (gives approximate Fahrenheit). Common reference: 0°C = 32°F, 20°C = 68°F, 37°C = 98.6°F, 100°C = 212°F.
1 pound = 0.453592 kilograms. 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds. So 70 kg = 154.32 lbs, and 150 lbs = 68.04 kg. The pound is used in the US and informally in India for body weight. India officially uses kilograms. To convert kg to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. To convert pounds to kg, multiply by 0.453592.
1 mile = 1.60934 kilometres. 1 kilometre = 0.621371 miles. So 10 miles = 16.09 km, and 100 km = 62.14 miles. India uses kilometres for all road distances, while the US and UK use miles. In terms of speed: 60 mph = 96.56 km/h, and 100 km/h = 62.14 mph. The mile is also used for running — a mile race = 1,609 metres, slightly longer than the standard 1,500m athletic race.
1 tola = 11.6638 grams exactly. The tola is a traditional Indian unit of weight that remains the standard for gold jewellery transactions across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. 10 tolas = 116.638 grams. The global gold price is quoted per troy ounce = 31.1035 grams = 2.6667 tolas. When jewellers quote gold price per tola, they multiply the per-gram price by 11.6638. The 24-carat gold coin most commonly traded in India weighs exactly 1 tola (≈ 11.66 grams).
In binary (how computers actually measure): 1 TB = 1,024 GB. In decimal (how storage manufacturers label products): 1 TB = 1,000 GB. This is why a "1 TB" hard drive shows approximately 931 GB when connected to a computer — the drive uses decimal (1,000 GB) while the operating system measures in binary (1,024³ bytes). For internet speed: connections are measured in megabits per second (Mbps). 1 byte = 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps connection downloads at approximately 12.5 MB/s (megabytes per second).
1 US gallon = 3.78541 litres. 1 UK/Imperial gallon = 4.54609 litres. 1 litre = 0.264172 US gallons = 0.219969 UK gallons. India uses litres for all liquid measurements. Fuel efficiency in India is measured in km/litre; in the US it is miles per gallon (mpg). To convert: if a car gets 30 mpg (US), that is approximately 12.75 km/litre or 7.84 litres per 100 km.
