Cover Letter Structure That Works
| Paragraph | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Opening | State the role and where you found it — one or two sentences, get straight to the point |
| Why you're a fit | Your single strongest, most relevant achievement — with a number if possible |
| Why this company | One specific, genuine reason you want to work there — shows you didn't mass-apply |
| Closing | Restate interest, thank them, and invite next steps — keep it short |
5 Common Cover Letter Mistakes
Mistake 1 — Repeating your resume word for word
✗ Wrong: Listing the same bullet points from your resume in paragraph form.
✓ Right: Pick one achievement and tell the story behind it — the context your resume doesn't have room for.
Mistake 2 — Starting with "I am writing to apply for..."
✗ Wrong: A flat, generic opening line every recruiter has read a thousand times.
✓ Right: Lead with a specific hook — a shared connection, a relevant result, or genuine enthusiasm for the company's work.
Mistake 3 — Leaving the company name from your last application in the letter
✗ Wrong: Forgetting to update "Acme Corp" when applying to a different company.
✓ Right: Always re-read the full letter before sending — this is the single most common (and most damaging) cover letter mistake.
Mistake 4 — Writing more than one page
✗ Wrong: A dense, five-paragraph letter covering your entire career history.
✓ Right: Keep it to three to four short paragraphs — recruiters skim, they don't read closely.
Mistake 5 — Being overly formal or overly casual
✗ Wrong: Either "To Whom It May Concern" with stiff corporate language, or starting with "Hey!"
✓ Right: Aim for warm but professional — "Dear Hiring Manager" and a confident, direct tone throughout.
